F is for Flowers

SCOPE This piece was created for my poster design course in college. We had to choose a letter and create a poster for it. Then, we had to physically build a sculpture of the letter, take a photo of it, then integrate it into our design somehow. We could only use one font and had to have text big, medium, and small. All of the types on the poster had to begin with the letter that you initially choose. The poster is 18” by 24” inches and is in full color. METHODOLOGY There were many steps within this single project. It started with choosing a letter and I decided on “F” because of its unique shape. I then chose the theme of flowers because that was the first word that came to mind. I kept a natural theme throughout the poster and utilized traditional flower colors like green and pink. I chose my typeface to be Helvetica because of its unique font families and diversity. I focused on layering in this project and used a lot of photography and mixed it with digital design to create the perfect blend. LEARNINGS This was the first design project when I physically had to build something tangible and bring it into class. This opened my eyes to how photography and photo scanning can be used in your design practices. Ultimately this gave me a good lesson in the craft of projects and how to use different parts of my design brain to learn how to solve problems creatively. CONTRIBUTION I was responsible for choosing the letter and theme of this poster. I then had to build the sculpture and use my photography skills to capture it to use in my digital design. Then I did the full design in Adobe Illustrator and printed it out on heavy-weight coated paper in the print shop.
